Pumice is a natural material of volcanic origin, with an extremely porous, lightweight and stable structure, ideal for improving drainage, aeration and root development of substrates for both potted plants and open-ground cultivation.
Thanks to its ability to retain a small reserve of water without causing waterlogging, pumice helps maintain the perfect balance between moisture and oxygen around the roots.
Available in different grain sizes and in various package formats, it is suitable for both hobby and professional use.
Why use pumice with plants
- ✔ Improves drainage of the soil, preventing waterlogging and root rot.
- ✔ Increases aeration of the substrate, promoting healthy root growth.
- ✔ Maintains proper moisture balance by absorbing and gradually releasing water.
- ✔ Does not break down over time and keeps the substrate structure stable.
Available grain sizes
- Fine (0/3 mm and 1/3 mm): ideal for sowing, cuttings and mixes for plants with fine roots.
- Medium (3/5 mm): perfect for most repottings of ornamental, tropical, cactus, succulent and bonsai plants.
- Coarse (6/12 mm): recommended for drainage layers at the bottom of pots and for very airy mixes.
Ideal for
- Cactus and succulents
- Bonsai
- Ornamental and tropical plants, both in pots and in open ground
- Plants that require very well-draining and airy substrates
How to use it
- In the substrate: mixed with potting soil to improve structure, drainage and oxygenation.
- Drainage layer: at the bottom of the pot to help excess water flow away.
- Pure or almost pure: for big plants or for technical growing (cactus, bonsai, plants sensitive to waterlogging).
💡 Tip: Pumice is one of the best materials to improve potting soil structure in the long term, because it does not compact and keeps the substrate airy and well-draining.
